Rosslare Strand

Rosslare Strand, or simply Rosslare, is a village in County Wexford, Ireland. The name Rosslare Strand is used to distinguish it from the nearby community of Rosslare Harbour, site of the Rosslare Europort.

Rosslare has been a tourist resort for at least 100 years. It prides itself on being the sunniest spot in Ireland, and records bear this out: Rosslare receives 300 hours more sunshine each year than the average place in Ireland. The long sandy strand is a Blue Flag beach so it attracts swimmers and families, while there are a number of good golf courses in the vicinity. The Dublin to Rosslare Europort railway passes through the village. Rosslare has a few good hotels and a few good restaurants.

The village has seen a huge amount of building in recent years, as tax grants became available for building holiday homes in this region. As a result, there are large housing estates of holiday homes near the strand.

A long sandspit stretching north from Rosslare separates Wexford Harbour from the Irish Sea. Until the early 1920s, this spit stretched for many miles north, almost touching the Raven Point and giving a very narrow mouth to Wexford Harbour. At the end of the spit was a small fort called Rosslare Fort. In the winter of 1924-25 a storm breached the spit and it was gradually washed away. The fort was abandoned and now all that is left is an island at low tide. Most maps of Ireland, however, still show the long spit of sand.

Ship wreck on Rosslare Strand
Hi, I used to holiday in Rosslare Strand when I was a kid in the late 60s. In those days there was a ship wreck on the beach up somewhere around The Burrows. It must have been there some time as it appeared in all the postcards of the strand looking towards the Point.

I returned recently and immediately spotted its absence. What I'd like to know is A. When was this wreck removed, or did it just get covered by sand as the level does seem higher now. And B. What was the name of the ship?

Many thanks!

Ship wreck on Rosslare Strand
Hi. Received this by email:

This is in response to a readers question about the "wreck" of rosslare strand. The boats name was "achroite" and it arrived on the strand in 1963.I grew up on holidays in rosslare from 1967 to 1984 and have fond memories of staying in the burrow caravan park owend by the byrne familly and passed on after the late pat byrne to another part of the byrne familly who came nack from england to look after the site which has expanded extensively since I was a child. The famouse kelly dynasty of Kellys strand hotel had a huge painting of the wreck in one of their foyets for many years and children of a fishing age enjoyed night fishing of the wreck and catching eels inside it.In later years parents became anxious over pieces of rusting metal on the beach and possible accidents on/of the "wreck"----nothing bad ever happend in my time untill some "genius" decided to blow it up one winter in 86or 87creating an almighty danger to bathers from its base hull under the sand to all the debris washed up all around the strand from the "point" to the harbour and its removal caused a speeding up of the strand to be eroded away nessesatating all the boulders to be implemented along the strand coastline.I see now on googleearth the strand has regained some of its old beauty after new beach bolsters were "eventually renewd"! and finally I have a question! Does anyone know of the ledgend of the"Cabbits"of the saltee isles? and or the ghost ship off rosslare harbour that we all saw many times on warm foggy nights!

Ship wreck on Rosslare Strand
The Achroite was actually on her way to be scrapped when she developed engine trouble and was under tow when she broke loose and ran aground at Rosslare Strand close to the golf club. She was purchased by a Patrick Roche from Killinick who gutted her for scrap where she lay.She had a lot of valuable copper and brass piping in her.It has been many many years since I've been to Rosslare but I'm sure she has long gone by now. TR.

I've just recently come back from a few days at Rosslare and can confirm that the remains of the boat are still there. I haven't noticed them on previous visits over the last few years so perhaps it's a result of sand shifting, but there were definite iron remains resembling a boat shape in the approximate position where I remember it being.
